Norvasc (amlodipine) refers to a drug class called calcium channel blockers.

Mechanism of action
Norvasc works by affecting the amount of calcium found in your heart and muscle cells. Norvasc may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive drugs for the treatment of angina (chest pain) and high blood pressure (hypertension).
Amlodipine controls your blood pressure and lowers the quantity of angina attacks by relaxing blood vessels and widening them. Norvasc also reduces the risk of stroke and heart attacks. Amlodipine is available under several brand names. It could be that your doctor has suggested this medication against a disease that does not appear in this informative article. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or if you are unsure about why you are taking this medicine, check it. Do not stop taking amlodipine without consulting your physican. Do not give Norvasc to anyone else, even someone who suffers from the same symptoms as yours. This medication may interfere with people for whom it was not prescribed.
One tablet per day is sufficient to lower blood pressure for 24 hours. Norvasc is used alone or in combination with other drugs for the treatment of oxygen deficiency of the heart muscle known of angina pectoris.
Adults: In the treatment of both hypertension and coronary heart disease, the starting dose is usually 5 mg once a day. The dose may be increased to 10 mg per day depending on the clinical effect. Concomitant use of thiazide diuretics, drugs that block beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors do not require dose adjustment of amlodipine. Amlodipine is used in the same doses is equally well tolerated by elderly patients and younger.
Use in children:
- The efficacy and safety profile of amlodipine in pediatric patients have not been established.
- known hypersensitivity to dihydropyridine derivatives, amlodipine, and the other components of the preparation;
